Over a Million Years in the Making — Now in Shawn & Karen’s Pool

The ocean breeze, the shimmer of water, and the timeless charm of stone — Shawn and Karen Cameron’s new swimming pool in Langebaan, Western Cape, is a masterpiece of nature and craftsmanship. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the pool may be just 32 m², but its impact is as grand as the view it commands — especially during golden hour, when the light turns the whole scene into magic.

By the time the Camerons’ Sky Blue natural stone tiles arrived, they were already over a million years old, shaped by the earth itself. Now, they’ll spend the next million years enjoying a second life — as the star of their coastal home.

Choosing the perfect tile wasn’t easy. “Your range is quite extensive and there are a lot of tiles I like. There are a few colours that I love,” Shawn admitted. With Karen’s input and keen eye, the couple explored several options before finally agreeing on our vibrant Sky Blue range.

“When the sun’s out, the tiles mimic the colour of the lagoon. I’m very happy with them — I’ve had a lot of compliments,” Shawn shared. The shallow 1.2m depth means the blue really comes alive under the sun. While Shawn admits he might have chosen a lighter tile had he known how depth influences colour, both he and Karen are thrilled with the final result.

The pool was expertly constructed by Francois van der Westhuizen, owner of Poolscape Pool Company, who shared some insight into the process:

“I’ve worked with many natural materials before — quartz slate and the occasional polished slate, which is very pricey. But HSN’s tiles are truly excellent quality with a beautiful finish. I’ll definitely use them again. The only challenge for us here in Cape Town is that transport from Johannesburg can be costly. Using a special pool epoxy and epoxy grout. It’s a long and expensive process, but it’s the only way to ensure lasting results.”
